2024
Paintings of sky and clouds inspired by European and Eastern art, as well as by direct observation. The sky, though ever-changing in appearance, also has a perpetual aspect - without beginning and end.
The natural world is where I can experience this non-duality of reality most clearly and it is the primary reason that my painting practice has come to focus on it in these past few years.
Season Paintings 2021-22
My latest body of work was created between rural Massachusetts and Los Angeles. Painted outdoors, each of the paintings was started in my native Massachusetts (where I was teaching for the year) and completed in Los Angeles. The series was continued throughout the year, with the changing seasons of the New England landscape juxtaposed against the desert landscape at the foot of the San Gabriel mountains within each painting.
The paintings were made as a way to help me deal with the homesickness that I felt in each place. Painting outside in beloved natural surroundings was my way of being fully present where I was.
The finished pieces, however, aim to be more than the sum of their distinct parts. The plaster-like 'pour' of the white absorbent ground, creates both an inset window and a three-dimensional relief that combines with the painting above and below to create a unique third 'space', given life, hopefully, through sensitivity to color, attention to surface, and energetic, unselfconscious mark-making.
